15-year-old charged for threatening to burn down a Port Coquitlam home, released on conditions

COQUITLAM – Police say a 15-year-old youth who does not live in the Tri-Cities area has been charged for allegedly threatening to burn down a residence in Port Coquitlam.

Following a police investigation into a May 17, 2026, incident which occurred in Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam RCMP say they have received charge approval for three alleged offences against a 15-year-old youth. 

“After an investigation by the Coquitlam RCMP, beginning with frontline uniformed General Duty members and continuing with the Coquitlam RCMP General Investigation Section, investigators conducted a thorough examination of evidence, resulting in the identification and arrest of the alleged suspect, who does not reside in the Tri-Cities area,“ Coquitlam RCMP spokesperson Corporal John Graham said.

On Tuesday, August 4, Crown prosecutors approved three counts against the youth, who cannot be publicly named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The approved charges against the youth are:

  • Mischief under $5000 – Section 430(4) of the Criminal Code;
  • Uttering threats – Section 264.1(1) of the Criminal Code; and
  • Breach of a disposition order – Section 137 of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

“This isolated incident involved alleged threats to burn down a residence in a highly populated Port Coquitlam neighbourhood. Coquitlam RCMP strive to ensure that our citizens and neighborhoods are safe,” Cpl. Graham said. “When a criminal incident arises, we utilize all resources in our commitment to ensure public safety.”

Police say the youth was released from custody and is bound by numerous protective conditions.
