Roofing company fined over $19,000 for unsafe practices at Chilliwack worksite
CHILLIWACK/FRASER VALLEY – Multiple contracting firms have been fined by a provincial regulator for failing to maintain safe work standards at construction sites in Chilliwack and throughout the Fraser Valley.
According to a news release from WorkSafeBC, the construction sector remains one of British Columbia’s highest-risk sectors. Many of the most serious workplace injuries occur due to falls from heights, workers being struck by mobile equipment and other familiar hazards that can be prevented through effective planning and other means.
To that end, WorkSafeBC says a Langley roofing company was issued a fine of over $19,000 on June 23 for activities at their Chilliwack worksite. WorkSafeBC had issued a stop-work order at Langley Roofing Co. Ltd.’s roof replacement worksite due to a lack of fall protection. During a follow-up inspection, WorkSafeBC says it observed workers on the roof conducting roofing activities, a violation of the stop-work order. Langley Roofing Co. Ltd. failed to comply with the order, resulting in a fine of $19,232.06.
In another incident, WorkSafeBC attended a townhouse complex worksite in Langley in response to an incident where an excavator employed by M&M Excavating Services Ltd. struck a gas line. WorkSafeBC says it determined that the firm had expanded the size of an excavation without assessing the additional area for underground utilities. This firm failed to ensure it accurately determined the location of all underground utility services in the area before excavating with powered tools and equipment, a repeated violation. M&M was fined $24,493.43 on July 3.
