City of Mission responds to spill near Ainsworth Street and Smith Avenue

MISSION — The City of Mission, Mission Fire Rescue Service and Mission RCMP have responded to a material spill near the intersection of Ainsworth Street and Smith Avenue.

The spilled material has not been identified and is being treated as potentially hazardous. The source of the spill is also unknown.

Emergency containment and initial remediation work was completed Wednesday evening (August 5), including the removal of material from the site. Samples have been sent for expedited laboratory testing to identify the material and determine next steps.

In a news release Thursday afternoon, the city says there is no immediate threat to the health and safety of residents. The spill is located at an adequate distance from nearby homes and has not reached any watercourses or groundwater.
