Abbotsford receives $7 million for Fraser Highway improvements

ABBOTSFORD — The City of Abbotsford will receive $7 million in federal infrastructure funding to advance the second phase of improvements to Fraser Highway. The work is expected to reduce congestion while improving safety.

The funding is coming from the Build Communities Strong Fund and will result in upgrades between Mt. Lehman Road and Station Road.

Mayor Ross Siemens said the improvements are needed on a corridor that carries more than 30,000 vehicles each day. “Upgrades are essential for keeping people moving safely and efficiently throughout Abbotsford,” Siemens said in a statement.

Phase 2 includes upgraded traffic signals, smart signal technology for improved traffic management, and new northbound and southbound left-turn lanes at Bradner Road and Ross Road.

In addition, the project will widen Fraser Highway to five lanes between Station Road and Lefeuvre Road, add a crosswalk serving Engineer Park, and produce multi-use pathways on both sides of the highway along that section.

Phase 1 of the improvement were completed in 2023 and included intersection upgrades and centre left-turn lanes at Lefeuvre Road, Bradner Road, Ross Road, Stevens Street and Pinegrove Street. The third phase will extend the five-lane widening and multi-use pathways from Lefeuvre Road to Mt. Lehman Road.

The overall value project is predicted to be $13.5 million. In addition to the $7 million federal contribution, funding is being provided by Abbotsford taxpayers.

The City says with funding for the project secure, planning and design work will continue. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2027.
