CHILLIWACK – Police in Chilliwack say high-speed driving on Highway 1 through Chilliwack last week resulted in a man’s arrest and the seizure of suspected meth, drug equipment and potential burglary tools from his vehicle.

According to a statement from Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, who compiles weekly police activities, an RCMP member observed a vehicle travelling roughly 160 km/hour on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Yale Road off-ramp (Exit 109).

Corporal Kiener says a traffic stop was initiated on Knight Road, several kilometres from where the initial traffic infraction first occurred. That’s where police observed unstamped tobacco in plain view.

The man was subsequently arrested; a search of his vehicle revealed suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and potential break-in tools that were contrary to the driver’s court-ordered conditions.

On top of those alleged shenanigans, the driver showed signs of impairment and received a 24-hour driving ban. He was also issued a violation ticket for excessive speed.

In other notable developments for the week of June 22-28, Corporal Kiener says police investigated multiple break and enters reported to the RCMP detachment. Police received reports of storage locker thefts on Industrial Way and a trailer break in at a job site on Ashwell Road, where a significant quantity of tools were stolen. In another incident, a security company monitoring a property on Wolfe Road observed a man and woman actively stealing copper wire.

Police also responded to reports of a suspicious man in the Sleepy Hollow neighbourhood wearing clothing believed to be recently stolen from a nearby campground. Officers located the individual and determined he had allegedly broken into a building and stolen clothing. He was arrested and held in custody pending court.

The aforementioned incidents were just some of the 908 calls for service that police recorded for the week of Monday, June 22 through Sunday, June 28. There were 110 property crimes, 66 person-related offences, nine instances of impaired driving 23 collisions, 39 mental health calls and six missing persons cases.
