ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford were called to a home on Clearbrook Road Sunday morning after getting a report that a man came to a woman’s residence, tried to gain entry inside, and may have been carrying a hammer.

Abbotsford PD Sgt. Paul Walker says patrol officers responded to the 2800 block of Clearbrook Road Sunday, June 7, at just before 7 a.m. The caller told police that a man known to her attempted to gain entry into her home. He did not live at the home.

Prior to police arrival, Sgt. Walker says the man fled the area on foot. Preliminary information received indicated the man may have been holding a hammer or had one in his possession.

Sgt. Walker says officers quickly located the suspect on Clearbrook Road and, based on the reported circumstances—including the potential presence of a weapon—initiated a high-risk arrest. The man was safely taken into custody without incident, which was caught on video by a nearby resident. The video depicted approximately seven officers surrounding a man who complied with instructions.

Following further investigation, it was determined that no criminal offence had occurred. The man was subsequently released and advised not to return to the residence, where he was not welcome.

“When responding to dynamic 911 calls involving potentially assaultive individuals believed to be armed with a weapon, public and officer safety remain our highest priorities,” Sgt. Walker explained. “The incident, which was captured on video by a bystander, reflects officers’ rapid response and application of training to safely manage a potentially high-risk situation. As additional information became available, the circumstances were reassessed accordingly and the man was released. No criminal charges are being sought.”
