CHILLIWACK — A new farm-to-table local restaurant is cooking up in downtown Chilliwack – making it the 10th dining business to do so at the historic Patten House.

Upriver Social House is now the latest restaurant set to take over the 114-year-old building at 9254 Nowell Street.

The bistro boasts a menu featuring Fraser Valley-sourced items, B.C. wines and craft beer, as well as salmon and pasta prepared in-house.

“The farms around Chilliwack grow world-class produce,” wrote the restaurant. “The rivers and waters off our coast deliver some of the finest seafood anywhere. The ranchers and dairies within an hour of our kitchen are producing ingredients that deserve to be celebrated — not flown in from somewhere else.”

Patten House was built in 1912 and has been something of a revolving door for restaurants over the past few years, with Garam Masala, Twisted Thistle and Society Gathering House all occupying and leaving the space within the last 13 years.

An opening date for Upriver has yet to be announced, but the restaurant recently announced it needs to rebrand after a “large national restaurant chain” trademarked the words “Social House”.

“Upriver is US. Upriver is THIS valley. Upriver is the Fraser River that runs through our backyard, the farms that feed our menu, and the community we are building this restaurant for. No corporation can take that away from us,” said the restaurant. “What we need from you, Chilliwack, is the second half. “

A contest has been held to choose a label for the Upriver name, with the winner to be announced “very soon. “
