FVRD to remove temporary flood barriers in Chilliwack River Valley

CHILLIWACK — The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) is wrapping up the emergency works near a Chilliwack River Valley resident’s property after some significant heavy rainfall events in the area over the past few months.

Temporary flood-protection Hesco barriers were initially installed in the Sheldon Road and Osborne Road neighbourhoods amid the December 2025 atmospheric river event, which proved useful again during the lower flood risk in March.

The FVRD says the latest information shows that the area’s lower-than-average snowpack will likely lead to a low freshet risk this spring.

Crews will begin removing the barriers starting May 25 as a result, with the District returning the property to its owner and repairing any damage caused by the installation.

“Under the Provincial Flood Response Plan, the removal of the Hesco barriers is a requirement due to the assets being on loan to the FVRD by the Province of British Columbia,” said the FVRD. “If a future emergency deemed it necessary, the Hesco barriers can be redeployed.”

Residents in the area are asked to watch for signs and follow workers’ directions during the work period.
