LANGLEY — Langley City seniors have access to 101 new affordable homes with the opening of The Maple.  It’s an eight-storey development for independent seniors.

The building is located on the 5400 block of 203 Street. That places residents within walking distance of downtown services, including shops, healthcare facilities and a future SkyTrain station.

“The Maple is essential because it is close to the services people rely on,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs. “It is helping more seniors stay independent and connected in their community while easing housing pressures in Langley.”

“The city is proud to support The Maple through community amenity contribution waivers, helping lower development costs and bring more affordable homes forward for older adults to stay independent and connected in our community,” said Mayor Nathan Pachal.

The building is part of the Langley Lions Housing Society campus. It is one of six buildings that serve seniors and people with disabilities.

The Maple includes an indoor lounge, outdoor patio and garden plots. The amenities were included to encourage social connections for the residents. All units are one-bedroom apartments with accessible bathrooms to support aging in place.

“I love this building, it’s got everything I need,” said tenant Glenda Fraser.

The project replaces the Birch, which was a 66-unit apartment building that was destroyed by fire in 2017. The new building is operated by the Langley Lions Housing Society, which has provided low-cost housing in the community for more than 50 years.
