Chilliwack RCMP urge public to come forward with any tips on mural defacement
CHILLIWACK – A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP detachment says police are actively investigating the defacement of a downtown Indigenous mural and urge anyone with tips to contact them.
According to a statement from Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, police are treating the incident seriously due to the fact it happened on the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (Tuesday, May 5).
“The mural holds significant cultural, historical, and spiritual meaning for members of the local Indigenous community,” Corporal Kiener said. “Acts of vandalism against culturally significant artwork are taken very seriously, as they impact not only property but also community well-being, identity, and respect. Police recognize the deep concern and hurt this incident may cause and remain committed to supporting the community and holding those responsible accountable.”
