24/7 coverage returns to Mission Hospital’s ER, but Fraser Health doesn’t rule out future reductions

MISSION – After weeks and weeks of reduced ER hours, Fraser Health says 24/7 coverage has resumed in the emergency department at Mission Memorial Hospital.

The hours were reinstated as of 8 a.m. Monday morning, May 4, FHA said in a statement.

“We recognize how important consistent access to emergency care is for the Mission community and we continue to work with the physician group to actively address physician staffing gaps as they arise to maintain service continuity,” Fraser Health said.

Fraser Health previously announced on April 7 that it would extend the reduced ER hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through to Monday, May 4.

As nice as it is to have full 24/7 coverage back at Mission Memorial Hospital, Fraser Health isn’t ruling out future reductions in ER operations.

“We remain committed to open communication with the community as we continue to support patients and their families. While full Emergency Department services have resumed, future service adaptations may still be required to help ensure predictable, safe and high-quality patient care,” Fraser Health said. “If any changes are needed, we will communicate them to the community in advance.

In the meantime, Fraser Health encourages people to explore their non-emergency care options, including Fraser Health Virtual Care at 1-800-314-0999. This hotline connects people with a registered nurse from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. People can also call 8-1-1 outside of those hours to speak with a health service navigator or a registered nurse. Residents can visit the Mission Urgent and Primary Care Centre from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, including statutory holidays. At the centre, you can receive care for urgent, non-life-threatening conditions, such as fever, minor cuts that may need stitches, burns, headaches or earaches, and sprains, but do not require emergency department services.

“We appreciate the community’s patience and support and thank our staff, medical staff and B.C. Emergency Health Services for their commitment to providing quality care,” Fraser Health said.
