SURREY — Police accidentally bumped bikes while travelling southbound on 96 Avenue and 152 Street in an RCMP training exercise Saturday morning, sending one officer to hospital with serious injuries.

On April 4, at around 10:10 a.m., officers from various RCMP units were participating in a Motorcycle Escort re‑certification course in Surrey when a BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) officer in a fully marked RCMP motorbike was rear-ended by another BCHP officer.

Officers immediately gave first aid and requested assistance from BC Emergency Health Services.

Both officers were then taken to hospital, where the injured officer remains.

“Our focus right now is ensuring our injured officer receives the best possible care and support,” said Inspector Adam Tallboy, officer in charge of Vancouver Island BC Highway Patrol.

“Policing, including training, carries inherent risks, and this incident is a reminder of the dangers officers face every day. We are also ensuring that all officers involved have access to the appropriate resources, including medical and peer support, as they recover from this incident.”

The other officer has been released and returned to the training course.
