Dirt bike rider nearly hits two people while fleeing police traffic stop in Mission

MISSION — Suspects have tried to hit the ground running and riding for varying offences these past couple of weeks in Mission, including dangerous driving, meat theft and a failed catalytic converter operation.

On March 1, at around 3 p.m., an RCMP officer patrolling the area of Stave Lake Street and Dewdney Trunk Road saw a green Kawasaki dirt bike with no license plate riding along the street.

When the officer tried to pull it over, the biker made a quick turn onto Stave Lake Street before turning back around toward the officer and speeding through a nearby gas station, nearly hitting a cyclist in the process.

The officer did not pursue it as the rider showed dangerous driving behaviour with no signs of stopping.

The dirt bike returned through the gas station parking lot again a few minutes later and nearly struck a pedestrian. Shortly after, a gas station customer reported that a rider had pulled up and demanded that the man put gas into the bike.

Mounties responded to more fleeing drivers nearly two weeks after that incident.

At roughly 12:45 p.m. on March 13, RCMP say two men tried – and failed – to steal from a vehicle parked outside a business on Glasgow Avenue.

The passenger of a black GMC Terrain with a damaged front grill scrambled under the parked car and began cutting off its catalytic converter, but fled without actually removing it.

The driver was described as a South Asian man with a backwards hat.

Anyone who sees a matching vehicle or has had their catalytic converter stolen recently from a vehicle in Mission should call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161 and quote file 26-3171.

A few days prior, on March 10, a Loss Prevention Officer called the police after spotting a known shoplifter who he believed might run out through the emergency exit with a loaded cart, which one witness says “had to be about 40 steaks”.

The man did go through the back door carrying over $1,000 in stolen goods, where an officer had just arrived in response to the report.

“The officer told the man he was under arrest, to which the man replied, ‘No, I’m not’, and ran back into the store,” said Mission RCMP. “The officer chased after the man and caught up with him inside the store, assuring him that he was, in fact, under arrest.”

A theft charge is now being recommended against the 35-year-old.

Police responded to a total of 295 calls for service between March 9 and March 15, according to Mission RCMP’s latest Community Connection.
