Fraser Valley under flood watch as atmospheric river continues

CHILLIWACK — The Fraser Valley is under a flood watch issued by the BC River Forecast Centre. Experts say up to another 150 mm of rain could fall over the South Coast region before the atmospheric river passes on Friday.

Officials say the earlier part of the storm deposited a large amount of snow at higher elevations. Significant melt of the fresh snow is likely which will add to the pressure on local waterways.

The River Forecast Centre is keeping a close eye on Washington State, which is also receiving a significant amount of rain from the system. Based on the current data, experts say a flood of the Nooksack River into the Sumas River is possible, but it has a low likelihood.

Roads and highways will continue to be challenging for drivers with the potential of road washouts. Officials urge drivers to always avoid flood waters or driving across road washouts. Before travelling, motorists are urged to check conditions on DriveBC.ca.
