CHILLIWACK — Downtown Chilliwack’s pizza-shaped hole this month may not stay vacant for too long with the introduction of a new fizzy tenant.

Chilliwack resident Zac Bisschop and his wife, Kayla, are launching Mona’s Sodas – the first brick-and-mortar dirty soda shop in the Fraser Valley.

“They’re really popular, mostly in the Mormon states in the U.S., but it’s really kind of blown up the last few years and started to expand down there, so we wanted to give it a try here,” said Bisschop.

The sodas were first popularized by the show “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” as a substitute for members who abstain from alcohol and coffee. Recipes involve taking regular sodas, such as Pepsi or Dr. Pepper, and adding syrups ranging from cookie-flavoured to strawberry and mango.

Some flavours at Mona’s include “Summer Feeling”, a mix of grapefruit, pomegranate and Mountain Dew, “Mountain Babe”, which has raspberry puree, peach and vanilla cold foam, and “Dreamy Peach”, which adds the cold foam to a mix of Coke, pineapple and peach.

“A lot of it is just getting creative with different flavours and experimenting, and trying different things,” Bisschop explained. “We’ve been making a lot of pops here at home […] constantly sampling and trying different combos, messing around with the recipes.”

The only other dirty soda shop in the region is Pop Culture, a soda truck in Langley.

“A lot of people don’t know what dirty sodas are, but everyone that I’ve been able to get to try one has really enjoyed it,” added Bisschop. “I’m excited for people to give it a shot, and hopefully they like it.”

Mona’s Sodas takes possession of Elevated Pizza’s spot in District 1881 at 101-45939 Thunderbird Lane in March, with the goal of opening before summer.
