“Dark smoke remains in the area and some people may smell smoke when going outdoors,” Vanderheyden said. “People are asked to avoid the area and stay indoors to limit exposure if they notice smoke in the area.”

Multiple people commented on social media about the strong stench generated by the fire.

The Abbotsford PD said it had received “numerous” inquiries about a noticeable odour in the area across eastern Abbotsford.

“The odour is related to the fire at the rubber plant, and residents in eastern areas of the city may continue to notice the smell throughout the morning. At this time, there are no public safety concerns,” AbbyPD wrote online.

One person said the fire was still active at 5 a.m. when they drove by the rubber facility.
