94-year-old resident defrauded by gold jewelry scheme in Hope: RCMP

HOPE – Stories continue to circulate on social media about unsuspecting people being solicited by scam artists at gas stations or parking lots offering gold for sale.

In the latest incident, police in Hope say a 94-year-old senior was recently scammed by a man in a parking lot selling what he claimed to be gold jewelry under the guise that it was a personal emergency.

According to a recap provided by spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener for the week of July 13-20, Hope RCMP received a report of a fraud involving a 94-year-old victim. The victim was reportedly approached in a parking lot on Klassen Road by a man selling what he claimed to be gold jewelry.

The suspect convinced the victim to exchange a large sum of money for the jewelry, claiming he needed funds for a personal emergency.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.

“Hope RCMP would like to remind the public to be cautious when approached by strangers selling items in parking lots or other public places, as similar incidents have been reported numerous times over the past several months,” Corporal Kiener said. “Offenders often use high-pressure sales tactics and emotional stories to persuade victims into making quick decisions before they have an opportunity to verify the situation or seek advice. Seniors are also frequently targeted due to their perceived vulnerability and trusting nature.”

Hope RCMP wants to encourage family members and caregivers to regularly discuss fraud awareness with elderly loved ones, particularly those who live alone or may be vulnerable to unsolicited approaches.
