Chilliwack operations crews can now recycle asphalt, making pothole repairs faster and more efficient
CHILLIWACK – The City of Chilliwack says newly-purchased equipment now enables city operations crews to do certain pothole repairs, utility cuts and other paving jobs faster and more efficiently.
In a statement, the city says a recently acquired asphalt recycler helps reduce costs and environmental impacts associated with the city’s patch and pothole repair program.
When municipal crews removed old asphalt in the past, it had to be transported to a disposal facility off-site, and new hot asphalt mix was purchased from external plants located outside of Chilliwack. Now, when city crews remove and dispose of old asphalt, they can use the asphalt recycler at the Bailey Landfill to recycle and rejuvenate old asphalt in a more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible manner.
The city says asphalt can be reheated and repurposed when needed with the asphalt recycler, reducing delays caused by transportation requirements, external plant schedules, seasonal shutdowns, or supply shortages, and the increased availability of asphalt supply allows crews to complete pothole repairs and patches faster.
