YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Working for British Columbians in the spring legislative session

Jun 2, 2026 | 4:14 PM

During this year’s spring Legislative session, my colleagues and I focused on securing B.C.’s future in uncertain times by working to strengthen the economy, support vital public services, and bring down costs for families.

British Columbians and Canadians have been through a lot these past few years on account of U.S. tariffs, global inflation, and other challenges. In the face of international uncertainty, our government has been committed to securing a stronger future for British Columbia by focusing on the issues that matter most to the people of our province.

That’s why we are advancing efforts to grow the economy and create good, stable jobs.

Recently, Premier Eby met with the Prime Minister to make sure that British Columbia gets its fair share of Federal support.

More than $80 billion in potential investments through B.C.’s Look West plan are already approaching final decisions, including continued progress on LNG Canada Phase 2. These projects will help create good paying jobs in energy, forestry, manufacturing and more.

At the same time, we are strengthening the public services that families rely on. Major infrastructure projects are moving forward, including the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension and the construction of a new hospital in Surrey. These investments will improve access to care and reduce congestion in rapidly growing communities.

We are also continuing to invest in education, with funding for new playgrounds in 25 communities and a commitment to building a new high school in Tumbler Ridge following the devastating tragedy there.

Finally, we have been working hard to cut costs for families and help people get ahead. A new PowerSmart 2.0 plan from B.C. Hydro will help lower energy use and reduce monthly bills.

These initiatives build on work the province has done to cut childcare costs in half for many parents, reduce car insurance rates by hundreds of dollars a year, and keep electricity costs among the lowest in North America.

In total, 18 bills were passed this sitting, and there’s still more work to do.

British Columbia has so much to offer – abundant natural resources, resilient communities, and hardworking people. It is an honour to serve the great people of British Columbia and help build a stronger and more secure future for our province.
