52-year-old Abbotsford man arrested for setting cars on fire

ABBOTSFORD — An Abbotsford man is facing charges for setting cars ablaze on Thursday evening (Apr. 16).

At around 9:44 p.m., patrol officers with the Abbotsford Police Department responded to a suspicious vehicle fire in a parking lot in the 2700 block of Gladwin Road, where investigators determined that a man had apparently tried to set the car on fire.

Shortly after, at roughly 10:17 p.m., AbbyPD received a report of a second vehicle fire in the 32800 block of South Fraser Way.

That car received “significant damage”.

“Through timely communication and coordinated patrol efforts, multiple frontline officers quickly canvassed the area, identified, and located a suspect nearby,” said AbbyPD.

As a result, 52-year-old Matthew Waldie has been arrested and charged with two counts of arson.

He remains in custody pending a court appearance at Abbotsford Law Courts on Monday, April 20.
