FRASER VALLEY – Canada Post says it will begin preliminary work on converting roughly 17,000 addresses in Abbotsford and Mission to community mailboxes as it seeks to “restore and renew” the country’s postal service and eliminate door-to-door mail delivery.

According to a statement, Canada Post says it has reached a turning point and is taking action to ensure it can meet the changing needs of Canadians in a financially sustainable way.

After meeting with its bargaining units and their agents, the corporation has launched preliminary work to convert the remaining addresses that receive door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes and modernizing its retail network.

The corporation says is initiating discussions with 13 communities across the country as it prepares to begin converting approximately 136,000 addresses from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in late 2026 and early 2027.

They include approximately 11,000 addresses in Abbotsford containing a postal code starting with V2S or V2T, and roughly 6,000 addresses in Mission containing a postal code starting with V2V.

Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz, Harrison Hot Springs, Hope and Langley were not listed among the 13 communities that will move from residential delivery to community mailboxes. Nearly three out of every four Canadian addresses already receive their mail and parcels through some form of centralized delivery.

Canada Post describes the conversation as a “transformation” that will strengthen the postal service, allow it to be a better partner for businesses, enable national commerce, and help it meet its dual mandate of delivering for all Canadians without being a recurring burden on taxpayers.

“It’s therefore important the Corporation move forward in a timely manner while working closely with its bargaining agents and the Government of Canada,” Canada Post said.
