RCMP issues warning after fentanyl packages seized in Mission

The pack of drugs were multi-coloured and looked like Nerds candy, and was believed to be fentanyl.

“Police caution the public to be aware of any unknown substances that have a similar appearance, as even brief exposure to illicit fentanyl can be life-threatening,” warned Mission RCMP.

Mounties also responded to a drug-related mental health call that week, where a man was reportedly undressing himself and waving a knife around in the afternoon of March 30.

The man put down the knife and cooperated with being handcuffed when Mission RCMP’s Mental Health Liaison officer went to de-escalate, but he soon started experiencing delusions and was apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

“He was taken to hospital, apparently suffering from a drug-induced psychosis,” Mission RCMP said. “Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.”

Two days later, on April 1, maintenance workers reported a suspicious package on the roof of a local commercial building, which initial tests eventually showed was over half a kilogram of fentanyl.

It is unknown when the package got there or who it belonged to. It has since been seized for destruction.

Anyone who finds suspected fentanyl is urged not to handle it and notify police.

If you’ve been accidentally exposed to the substance, you are urged to immediately separate yourself from it and call 911 if unusual symptoms develop.
