ABBOTSFORD – AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says authorities are investigating this morning’s house fire on Cannon Avenue as an arson due to the circumstances involved.

At approximately 4:32 a.m. Thursday morning (Apr. 9), Abbotsford Police Department patrol officers attended the 33400 block of Cannon Avenue to assist Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service with traffic control at a working residential structure fire.

Sgt. Walker says all occupants of the residence were safely evacuated and were treated at the scene by first responders for the effects of smoke inhalation.

During the course of the fire investigation, the circumstances were deemed suspicious in nature. As a result, the Abbotsford Police Department Major Crime Unit has assumed conduct of the investigation.

Sgt. Walker says the investigation is in its early stages, and police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has information to come forward and speak with investigators.

“I can confirm that the fire occurred at a residence known to police, where officers have attended for a variety of calls for service,” Sgt. Walker told Fraser Valley Today.

Aletta Vanderheyden, communications and public relations manager for the City of Abbotsford, told Fraser Valley Today that firefighters were notified shortly after 4:30 a.m. about a fire on Cannon Ave.

No individuals were injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Vanderheyden said.
