AGASSIZ/HARRISON HOT SPRINGS – Two guys who relieved themselves in public and drove away in their vehicles have been issued driving bans last week after RCMP members became suspicious and determined they were both impaired.

According to a recap of police activities for the Agassiz RCMP detachment related to the week of Monday, March 30 through Sunday, April 5, a Mountie observed a man urinating outside a gas station in Harrison Hot Springs before he drove away in a vehicle. Police initiated a roadside stop and acted on suspicion the man might be impaired. Police conducted a roadside test confirming impairment, and the driver was issued an immediate roadside prohibition. The man’s vehicle was towed.

In a similar incident over in Agassiz, a man was observed relieving himself in a parking lot before departing in his vehicle. A roadside stop discovered the driver had an invalid license and was also intoxicated. Yet another immediate roadside prohibition was issued, and another vehicle was towed.

“When nature calls in public places, it has a way of raising eyebrows, and in this case, roadside testing resulted in two impaired drivers being removed from the roadway,” Corporal Kiener said.

Agassiz officers conducted numerous proactive impaired‑driving investigations in the community this past week, resulting in several impaired drivers being removed from the roadways.

“Police continue to proactively target impaired driving and remind motorists that impaired operation puts everyone at risk. If you plan to drink, plan a safe ride home,” Cpl. Kiener said.

The incidents were two of 81 calls for service the Agassiz RCMP detachment fielded during Mar. 30-Apr. 5.

In a related incident involving impairment, a vehicle was observed driving erratically on Highway 9. A roadside stop was attempted by an officer, but the vehicle did not stop and the officer disengaged.  Awhile later, the vehicle was located a distance away having been involved in a single vehicle collision with concrete barriers. The driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, had suffered minor injuries. It was determined the driver was also impaired and was issued an immediate roadside prohibition before being brought to the hospital and their vehicle being towed.

In one other notable incident, police received a report of a break and enter at a marina in Harrison Hot Springs. Unknown suspects allegedly damaged a fence and attempted to steal several motorized water sport vehicles, but their attempt was unsuccessful, and it is believed the trailer being used by the suspects was not the appropriate size for the machines. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
