HOPE – Mounties in Hope say a drunk driver has been arrested at a rural home between Chilliwack and Hope after he fled from police during a traffic stop last week.

According to a recap for the week of Monday, March 30 through Sunday, April 5 provided by Upper Fraser Valley RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, Hope RCMP received multiple reports of a suspected impaired driver operating a vehicle in the Hope area. Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed.

Additional information gathered by authorities led officers to a residence on St. Elmo Road, located near Laidlaw, where a man matching the driver’s description was located and arrested with the assistance of the Police Service Dog. Following the investigation, the vehicle was impounded, and the man was issued an immediate roadside prohibition for impaired driving.

In other incidents this past week:

Officers observed a vehicle near a convenience store in Hope during the early morning hours and conducted a roadside stop. The driver exhibited signs of impairment. During the interaction, officers observed, in plain view, items consistent with drug trafficking inside the vehicle. The driver was arrested, and a subsequent search located trafficking‑quantity amounts of suspected illicit substances and drug paraphernalia. The driver was issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition, and the vehicle was towed.

Officers attended a report of a break and enter at a gas station in Boston Bar. Police say damage was observed at the building and several items were taken. The investigation is ongoing

Police received a report of a vehicle break‑in on the Uztlius Creek Forest Service Road near Boston Bar. The vehicle sustained damage, and items were stolen.

Corporal Kiener says there have been several recent reports of thefts from vehicles in the Boston Bar area.

Further, Hope RCMP also received multiple reports this past week of thefts from vehicles and the theft of licence plates in the Hope area. In addition, a stolen vehicle was reported on Old Yale Road, where the keys had been left inside.

Corporal Kiener is reminding the public to always lock their vehicles and avoid leaving valuables inside, regardless of how brief the time away from the vehicle may be.
