Chilliwack Fire issues another safety reminder after machine lights up in building on Progress Way

CHILLIWACK — A sprinkler system has come to the rescue at a building in Chilliwack this morning (April 6).

Just before 5:30 a.m., firefighters from Halls 1 and 4, along with BCEHS, were dispatched to a two-storey commercial structure fire in the 44000 block of Progress Way and found smoke coming from the building’s ventilation system.

Initial reports indicated a magnesium fire inside a machine, but the automatic sprinkler system helped contain it to the area before crews arrived.

Firefighters then confirmed that the fire did not spread within the building and ventilated the structure.

All damage was limited to the machinery.

Those inside the building activated their fire safety plan and evacuated the building at the time of the incident. 

There were no reported injuries to occupants or firefighters.

The business is expected to keep working at partial capacity while crews investigate the fire.

Krista Minar, assistant fire chief with the Chilliwack Fire Department, is now urging business owners to keep their fire plans up to date. 

“Businesses are encouraged to review their plans at least annually, and whenever there are changes to operations, layout, staffing, or equipment,” said Minar. “Regular review and staff familiarity with Fire Safety Plans help ensure safe evacuation, reduce risk to workers and the public, and support effective emergency response.”
