MISSION — Fire crews had another busy month in Mission this March.

According to the Mission Fire Rescue Service’s monthly call data, firefighters responded to a total of 387 calls in the past month – averaging 12 each day.

Fires made up just over a quarter of those reports (103), while 64 per cent of calls consisted of medical reasons (246).

The fire department also responded to 38 rescues during that time.

One notable incident was the fire at the seniors’ complex at the Chartwell Carrington House on March 9, which caused no serious injuries or fatalities but sent 16 residents to hospital with smoke inhalation.

“For complexity, because of the resident type, [this fire] is probably one of our biggest,” Mission Fire Chief Mark Goddard told reporters in a briefing on March 10. “I mean, we have had large buildings go before, but just given the complexity, the fact that it’s a care home adds a whole new level of complexity to it.”

A total of 142 people were evacuated from the residence that day.

Mission firefighters have responded to 288 fire calls from January to date.
