Strong winds expected Tuesday evening across Fraser Valley, Fraser Canyon and Coquihalla
CHILLIWACK — Strong winds expected to sweep across the Fraser Valley Tuesday (March 24) evening, prompting Environment Canada to issue a Special Weather Statement for the Fraser Canyon and the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Kamloops and Kelowna.
While wind gusts up to 60 km/h are expected through the Fraser Valley, the gusts could hit 80 km/h along the highways leading from Hope to the B.C. Interior. In addition, Environment Canada is forecasting up to 25 mm of rain to fall over Chilliwack and Abbotsford over the course of Tuesday.
Environment Canada says the wind gusts could be strong enough to lead to local power outages. And it suggests that high-sided vehicles may be difficult to keep control of because of the wind pushing them around along highways.
The winds are being produced by a low-pressure system that is expected to develop in the afternoon and peak in the evening. The winds are expected to calm in the early morning hours of Wednesday.
