SURREY — One man is now facing an upgraded charge after an early morning shooting at a Surrey home on Sunday, March 15.

Surrey police responded to the incident at an apartment complex in the 13900 block of Laurel Drive at around 1:40 a.m., where officers found a victim suffering from gunshot wounds.

The man died on the scene, while another man was arrested and taken into custody.

IHIT investigators then took over the case and determined that the incident was isolated.

Both men knew each other.

Prosecutors approved one count of manslaughter with a firearm against 29-year-old Abo Abdel Kurdali that same day, but on Thursday, March 19, the BC Prosecution Service upped the charge to second-degree murder.

“The upgrading of the charge in this investigation is a result of continued efforts by the investigative team and our partners,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “We continue to pursue every avenue and examine every detail to provide clarity and answers for the family. We extend our thoughts to the victim’s loved ones.”

Kurdali remains in custody and appeared in court this morning.
