2 charged after missing B.C. mathematician found dead in Mission

MISSION — Two people are now facing charges in relation to a B.C. mathematician’s death– over one month after he went missing.

On the evening of February 2, Burnaby RCMP investigated the whereabouts of 45-year-old Masood Masjoody after reports from concerned neighbours.

Police deemed Masjoody’s disappearance as out of character and criminally involved.

Prior to his disappearance, Masjoody was known online as a former academic who was vocal about Iran’s ruling regime.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) then took conduct of the investigation and uncovered evidence in multiple locations of interest.

After weeks of extensive search efforts from investigators and local police, authorities found Masjoody’s remains in Mission on March 6.

Maple Ridge resident Mehdi Ahmadzadeh Razavi, 48, and 45-year-old North Vancouver woman Arezou Soltani have been arrested in relation to Masjoody’s homicide.

Prosecutors have approved one count of first-degree murder against each of the two individuals.

“We understand this case has impacted the Iranian community and has generated widespread concern and public interest. While the motive is still under investigation, we can say the victim and two accused were known to each other,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT.

“The laying of first-degree murder charges marks a significant milestone and reflects the hard work undertaken over the past several weeks; however, much work remains as the prosecution process begins.”

No further information will be released as the case is now before the courts.
