CHILLIWACK — Two Fraser Health teams have received new provincial grants to support the care of the region’s eldest members.

The Chilliwack-based Indigenous Caregiver Support Model is a home-based program that supports Indigenous Elders with complex needs to age safely in their community.

“This model is an example of what is possible when care is built on relationships, trust and community,” said Amanda LaBoucane, interim vice president for Indigenous Health and Cultural Safety.

The program launched as a pilot in 2023, supporting 33 Elders and their caregivers in the Fraser East. With $1.3 million in new funding from Health Research BC, the program is looking to expand its reach in the area.

LaBoucane emphasized its impact on Elders who experienced the impacts of residential schools and the child welfare system firsthand.

“By strengthening caregiver capacity and confidence while bridging into integrated clinical care teams run by and for Indigenous people, we see improved health and wellness and stronger relationships within and between communities.”

Michael Smith Health Research BC has also awarded $1.3 million to a province-wide social programming initiative spearheaded by Fraser Health.

The program aims to refer older adults to non-clinical services such as physical activity clubs, social opportunities and nutrition services.

“To see these initiatives evolve so more older adults in B.C. can live well in their own homes is a testament to the passion and dedication of the research teams, and an example of how research truly is care,” said Kate Keetch, director of the Department of Evaluation and Research Services.

Health Research BC has awarded a total of $6.3 million to advance seniors’ home and community care in the province.

Teams in Island Health, Northern Health and Vancouver Coastal Health have also received the grant.
