CHILLIWACK — Communities from Hope to Chilliwack are still cleaning up the remnants of a strong windstorm that struck on Wednesday night.

At the time of writing, BC Hydro says roughly 234 Chilliwack residents – and over 1,400 in Hope – remain without power due to downed trees, wires and power lines during the storm.

“Crews continue working to repair damage and restore power to customers affected by Wednesday evening’s windstorm,” wrote BC Hydro. “Based on our current assessments, power is expected to be restored to customers in the Ryder Lake area of Chilliwack by this afternoon, and to those in the Chilliwack Lake area by late tonight.”

Sardis resident Ross Aikenhead, known for his clean-up efforts on the Chilliwack River Valley, reported at least a 13-kilometre stretch of damage in the area as of Thursday evening, from just west of Thurston Meadows to Centre Creek Forest Service Road, saying, “It’s going to be a long time before Post Creek has Hydro and phone again”.

Google Maps shows the road closures issued in Chilliwack yesterday have reopened.

One community has also opened its public areas and parking lots for the weekend.

Cultus Lake is inviting visitors to the park for spring break, touting quick response from staff following the windstorm.

Sunnyside Campground and areas with fallen trees are still being addressed, with staff actively working and using restoration equipment there.

“Your cooperation will go a long way in helping us speed up the process and keep everyone safe,” wrote the Park. “Thank you so much for your understanding and support.”

Heavy snowfall in the Manning Park area has caused additional damage and the need for extensive repairs. Customers in that area are expected to remain without power until Saturday evening.
