Seattle Sounders down Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 in CONCACAF Champions Cup play

VANCOUVER — Jesper Sorensen doesn’t believe a single loss will redefine the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Falling 3-0 to the Seattle Sounders on Thursday does, however, make it difficult for the Major League Soccer team to pursue its goal of getting back to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final.

Paul Arriola provided a pair of goals and Paul Rothrock came off the bench to round out the scoring as the Sounders took a 3-0 lead in the two-game aggregate round-of-16 series.

It was an uncharacteristically sloppy game for the Whitecaps, who controlled 64.5 per cent of possession, but looked out of sync, missing passes and committing multiple defensive lapses.

“I think we made a lot of turnovers and we didn’t get the flow in the game, and we had to run back. And also, Seattle did a good job breaking and playing through us in a couple of situations in the first half,” said Sorensen, Vancouver’s head coach.

“We made some big mistakes that put us in a very difficult situation.”

Now the ‘Caps will look to regroup before heading to Spokane, Wash., where the Sounders will host the back end of the series Wednesday.

“We were a good team three hours ago, we’re still a good team. And the players are good, good players. And we will be, of course, strong coming back,” Sorensen said.

“We know that we will have to do something special, and probably think we’re capable of doing it.”

Seattle looked dangerous early Thursday and found the back of the net just before the half.

Jesus Ferreira steamed into Vancouver territory and ‘Caps defender Mattias Laborda couldn’t catch him. The Sounders forward slipped a pass to Arriola, who fired a shot in to put the visitors up 1-0 at the 45-minute mark.

A key Vancouver piece was not on the field to start the second half as Blackmon, the reigning MLS defender of the year, was replaced by Canadian Ralph Priso in the lineup.

The American centre back walked out to the sideline after play began with what appeared to be an ice pack on the back of his right leg. It was later announced he left the match with calf tightness.

The ‘Caps continued to dominate possession early in the second half but it was the Sounders who scored in the 58th minute.

Defender Nouhou Tolo sent a ball in and Takaoka was there to make a stop, but the ball bounced off the ‘keeper, then off Arriola’s leg and into the Vancouver net to give Seattle a 2-0 advantage.

The play went to video review for a possible offside, with officials deciding the goal would stand. Many in the announced crowd of 12,446 at B.C. Place expressed their disagreement with loud boos.

The 31-year-old Arriola started his first game Thursday since being sidelined by a knee injury last season.

“The storyline of the day, probably for me, is Paul Arriola. It’s a year and a day since he did his ACL. And what a way to come back and start,” said Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer.

“It’s not just the goals, that’s not it. But some of his savvy play, some of his smart defending, helping Nouhou — there were a lot of good soccer plays, soccer experience that helped us in this game. And so Paul had a really, really good performance. And he scored a couple of good goals.”

The ‘Caps came close to biting into the deficit in the 68th minute when Laborda headed a shot on target and Sounders ‘keeper Stefan Frei made a diving stop. The ball popped out to Priso who put the ball up and over the cross bar.

The Sounders capitalized on the counter, moving up field with pace before Rothrock — who came on for Arriola in the 62nd minute — tapped a shot in from the side of the net to make it 3-0.

Vancouver continued to press and made a series of substitutions seemingly aimed at sparking offence but couldn’t rally. The result marked the club’s first loss in 2026, coming after the ‘Caps went undefeated over their first five games (4-0-1) of the campaign.

“We were not good enough, including me, in terms of quality, and also communication and everything. So we have to learn from it,” Takaoka said.

The Whitecaps advanced to the round of 16 after beating Costa Rican side C.S. Cartagines 2-0 on aggregate to open the tournament. The Sounders had a first-round bye as winners of the 2026 Leagues Cup.

The winner of the series will face either MLS side Cincinnati FC or Liga MX club Tigres in the quarterfinals.

Both the ‘Caps and Sounders will return to MLS play Sunday with Vancouver hosting Minnesota United and Seattle visiting the San Jose Earthquakes.
