Chilliwack Chiefs pull out overtime win to cap off Parents Weekend

The Chiefs got the job done in overtime after a big third-period push from the Prince George Spruce Kings. 

It was a night of celebration in the Chilliwack Coliseum for International Women’s Day as we recognized just a few of the many impactful and accomplished women from our community in a special ceremonial puck drop. 

Chilliwack started the game on the right foot, opening the scoring against a team that has seen great success in games where they score first, winning twenty of their twenty-four. A.J. Schaaf started the game hot with two great scoring chances before finally putting his third in the back of the net just forty-three seconds into the first period. A power play goal from Prince George tied the game up before the Chiefs’ own power play team got to work to take the lead back with a goal from Boris Borin. 

The Chiefs kept their foot on the gas in the second period, scoring three to increase their lead to four. Markuss Sieradzkis continued his momentum from Friday night, scoring his fifth of the weekend. Prince George’s power play, ranked second in the league, locked in to tally another with just three seconds remaining in the middle frame. 

It was a hard-hitting physical third period that saw the Spruce Kings’ special teams rally a comeback from a three-goal deficit to tie the game. Chilliwack’s penalty kill dug deep in the final minutes to kill a major penalty to ensure overtime.

With eleven seconds left to go in the five-minute penalty, Chilliwack went to work to win the faceoff, and eat the remaining seconds before going on the attack. Edvin Nilsson was the overtime hero with a shot that the Spruce Grove’s goalie lost track of over his shoulder before it rolled off of him and into the net.

Chiefs goaltender, David Di Girolamo, made some excellent saves throughout the game in his hard-fought win to end the Prince George Spruce Kings’ five-game win streak. The team capped off Parents Weekend with another win, earning all four points available to them in that time and giving their families a chance to see behind the scenes of their day-to-day life as a Chilliwack Chief. 

Chilliwack’s month of home ice advantage continues next weekend as the Chiefs take on the Langley Rivermen on Saturday, March 14th, at 6 PM for Special Olympics night presented by DHK Construction LTD.
