Bold, Ravens, Vikes advance to U Sports men’s basketball semifinals

CALGARY — The Toronto Metropolitan Bold outscored the UBC Thunderbirds 34-25 in the final quarter en route to a 97-91 victory in the U Sports men’s basketball quarterfinals on Friday at Jack Simpson Gym in Calgary.

Aaron Rhooms led the Bold with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Gabriel Gutsmore scored 23 and Kevin Toth had 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Holt Tomie and Nikola Guzina each scored 16 points for the T-Birds, while Nylan Roberts and Raj Dhadda each scored 13. Roberts had 10 rebounds, while Tomie had seven assists.

The Thunderbirds led 55-47 at halftime, but the Bold outscored UBC 26-11 in the third quarter to get the comeback going.

The Bold will play the Carleton Ravens in Saturday’s semifinals, while the T-Birds face the Laval Rouge et Or on the consolation side.

In Friday’s late game the Bishop’s Gaiters play the Acadia Axemen.

CARLETON 85 LAVAL 69

The Carleton Ravens upset the third-seeded Laval Rouge et Or 85-69 in Friday’s second quarterfinal matchup.

Aubrey Dorey Havens had 15 points and five assists, while Tyler Brown had 11 points for the sixth-seeded Ravens, who led 41-38 at halftime.

Chris Tshibola led Laval with 27 points, while Chakib Sedoud had 17 points and seven rebounds.

VICTORIA 100 CALGARY 86

The top-seeded Victoria Vikes overpowered the host Calgary Dinos 100-86.

Geoffrey James led the Vikes with 17 points, while Shadynn Smid had 16 points. The Vikes, who led 57-33 at halftime, will play the winner of Friday’s late game between the Gaiters and Axemen in Saturday’s semifinal.

Eli Djordjevic had 18 points and seven rebounds for the Dinos, while Mgrigendra Dhaliwal had 17 points and five rebounds.
