Minivan crashes into two other cars after Mission driver suffers medical issue

MISSION — Mission RCMP’s latest community round-up has seen another series of incidents on the road this past week.

On February 23, at around 4:30 p.m., a grey Pontiac minivan drove over a curb and a sidewalk – and only stopped after crashing into two vehicles at a mall parking lot along Lougheed Highway near Haig Street.

An ambulance that happened to pass by immediately pulled in to treat the 50-year-old driver, who seemed to have suffered a serious medical issue.

He was taken to hospital and is expected to survive. No other injuries were reported.

Anyone who saw a grey Pontiac Montana minivan travelling in the area of Lougheed Highway and the Cedar Valley Connector around 4:30 p.m. on February 23 is asked to call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161 and quote file number 26-2350.

In the afternoon prior, police were called to another parking lot along London Avenue for the report of a man passed out inside the vehicle. The responding officer blocked the car to prevent the man from suddenly driving away and was able to wake him up.

The officer then spotted several drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle, and after detaining the driver for a drug-impaired driving investigation, found out the car was stolen from Osoyoos.

The 34-year-old was then arrested for possession of stolen property, driving with a suspended license and breaching a previous undertaking as he was not allowed to be in a car without the owner present.

A Mission RCMP officer also stopped a pair of youth riding together on one electric scooter at around 10 p.m. that Friday, on February 20, at the intersection of Stave Lake Street and 11th Avenue.

Electric scooters are illegal on Mission roadways and sidewalks, and the two were riding along a busy, dark road with no helmets.

“Upon stopping the youth, the officer determined that they were both 17 years old, and were in possession of a large bottle of vodka and a 12-pack of alcoholic iced tea,” said Mission RCMP. “Their liquor was poured out, and they were educated about using electric scooters in Mission.”

Mission RCMP responded to 276 calls for service between February 16 and 22, according to the detachment’s latest Community Connection.
