HOPE — Search and rescue teams from Hope and Chilliwack prevented another tragic headline with the successful retrieval of three skiers from an avalanche this weekend.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, February 28, Hope Volunteer Search and Rescue teams were paged out to the incident on Thar Peak, in the Coquihalla Summit, and found two subjects with serious injuries on the 400-metre path they landed in after the avalanche.

The third subject was also injured but was able to call for help.

Chilliwack Search and Rescue assisted with the call, while Valley Helicopters helped SAR members in accessing the trio, who were all taken to ambulances on standby.

“We are thankful these individuals survived this experience,” said Hope Volunteer SAR. “The mountains are beautiful and fun, but they can be unforgiving. We wish them a speedy recovery.”

The group is also urging reminders about snow safety, as avalanche risk was moderate across all elevations that day.

“A low chance of avalanche activity does not always guarantee safety. It is important that individuals accessing the backcountry make educated choices when it comes to avalanche terrain.”

This is only one of several avalanche incidents leading to serious injury or death in recent weeks. In February alone, at least 12 skiers were found dead after avalanches in the U.S., B.C., Alberta and Quebec.
