Canada’s mixed diving team captures bronze medal at Montréal World Cup

MONTREAL — Canada’s mixed diving team captured a bronze medal at Montréal World Cup on Friday night.

Mia Vallée, Nathan Zsombor-Murray, Katelyn Fung and Matt Cullen were third with 448.80 points.

But it came down to the team’s final dive in the 10-metre synchro. Fung and Cullen scored 76.80 to all but secure a medal for Canada with 448.80 points overall.

“It was stressful,” Cullen said. “We had the last word and that put a little pressure on Katelyn and me.

“I think we handled this pressure well. We managed to make a good dive and get a medal.”

China finished first with 469.40 points. Mexico was second with 460.85 points.

The bronze medal was special for Vallée and Fung, who both missed qualifying for the final in their respective individual events.

“It’s a bit of a redemption for me,” Vallée said. “I was excited to get a second chance and prove that I was capable of doing it.”

Meanwhile, Canadians Carson Paul and Nathan Zsombor-Murray were third and ninth, respectively, to qualify for the final of the men’s three-metre springboard event.

Paul amassed 449.65 points to finish behind Wang Zongyuan (514.70) and Zheng Jiuyuan (455.70), both from China.

“It was my big goal to go to this event and give some good dives to give me a chance to dive again this weekend,” said Paul. “I feel good, I’m happy with my performance.

“I’ll try to reproduce it Sunday.”

Zsombor-Murray had 418.25 points.

Canada’s Kate Miller qualified for the women’s 10-metre final, finishing ninth in the qualification round with 301.00 points. Fung was 14th with 279.75 points but did not advance.
