ABBOTSFORD – Police in Abbotsford have arrested a 25-year-old man for alleged dangerous driving and refusing to provide a breath sample following a high-speed chase in which he was clocked at over 200 km/h in a posted 60 zone before crashing and hitting a light pole.

According to a statement from AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, an AbbyPD patrol officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 11 near Townshipline Road this past Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 10:44 p.m., using a speed laser. A grey pickup truck was detected travelling 198 km/h in the posted 80 km/h zone. Due to the extreme speed, additional officers were called to help as the vehicle continued westbound on Downes Road, driving in excess of 200 km/h in the posted 60 km/h zone.

To help stop the vehicle, Sgt. Walker says officers deployed a spike belt at the Mt. Lehman Road and Downes Road intersection. Shortly thereafter, the driver lost control and collided with a light pole at 48 Avenue and 272 Street in Aldergrove. Surprisingly, no injuries were reported by police.

Officers arrested the 25‑year‑old driver for dangerous driving and for refusing to provide a breath Sample after detecting alcohol on his breath. Criminal charges are pending, and the driver is scheduled for a first court appearance on April 13. He was also issued an immediate 90‑day driving suspension.

“Our officers remain committed to ensuring the safety of all road users,” Sgt. Walker said. “Dangerous driving, impaired driving, and excessive speeding will continue to be met with enforcement and accountability.”
