UPDATE: 1 person deceased, one person seriously injured after shooting in Chilliwack Sunday morning

UPDATE, 12 P.M. SUNDAY: A Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson now says one person is deceased and another person has been transported to hospital with serious injuries after a reported shooting at a home on Mellard Avenue in Chilliwack.

According to a statement from RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, Chilliwack RCMP frontline officers responded to calls of a shooting in a residence on Mellard Avenue in Chilliwack at 8:40 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15.

Upon arrival officers located two individuals inside the residence suffering from injuries, Cpl. Kiener said. Chilliwack RCMP Officers and BC Emergency Health Services located two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the individuals was pronounced deceased on scene and the other was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

There is a heavy police presence in the area, and the Chilliwack RCMP are asking the public to stay away as the situation unfolds, Cpl. Kiener said.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is assuming conduct of the investigation and will provide additional information at a later time.

CHILLIWACK – A heavy police presence has flooded the area of Mellard Avenue and Fletcher Street, located northeast of downtown Chilliwack, on Sunday morning.

According to multiple witness accounts, at least 10 police units, several ambulances and fire trucks surrounded the area of Mellard/Fletcher.

Police have set up yellow caution tape across one of the roads involved, according to an on-scene picture sent to Fraser Valley Today.

A helicopter has landed at the Chilliwack Airport to presumably assist one of the victims following this morning’s police incident.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener released a brief statement at 9:42 a.m. Sunday morning: “We are responding to an incident and I will share more information once it becomes available.  It is still very early in the police’s response to this situation.”

Scanner traffic indicated one person suffered a gunshot wound to the head and possibly three gunshot wounds to the chest, and that a victim was combative. However, police have not specifically addressed the number of gunshots involved in the incident.

Fire and ambulance units have been clearing from the area in the past half hour, according to scanner traffic.
