Canadian Forces to conduct earthquake training exercise around Hope
HOPE — Hope residents can expect to see a lot of military activity in the area next week. The Vancouver-based 39 Canadian Brigade Group will be participating in an exercise named Cougar Ready. It is three days of earthquake preparedness training beginning Friday, February 20.
The Brigade Group is made up of Canadian Armed Forces Army Reservists. They will be dealing with a simulation of a 6.2 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter near the Fraser Valley.
Officials say residents should expect to see unarmed soldiers in the Hope area throughout the weekend. They will be practicing a number of duties from reconnaissance of areas to establishing supply depots. They’re expected to plan and set up a field hospital and deploy water purification units.
The exercise will also see the reservists establish satellite communication links to provincial and federal authorities.
