ABBOTSFORD — An Abbotsford mushroom farm has recently been handed an environmental fine for failing to store water that often emits a “strong odour”.

In December 2025, Environmental Compliance BC gave a $14,800 penalty to Delfresh Mushroom Farm Ltd. as a result of a nearly three-year contravention against goody water storage rules.

Goody water is the liquid waste generated by composting mushrooms, which often creates a strong odour.

Guidelines state that mushroom compost facilities must treat air emissions and maintain a closed space under negative pressure to keep contaminants from polluting the surrounding environment.

Documents show that the farm’s tank covers blew off on April 8, 2022, causing an “extremely foul” smell that Delfresh either covered with tarps – or didn’t cover at all.

The issue persisted until January 2025 as Delfresh slowly worked to find a solution.

The farm has assured officials that it will return to compliance by the end of 2025, but remains non-compliant as of the December 2025 report.

Delfresh had previously been in the spotlight for disposing of effluent harmful to aquatic life into local creeks.
