CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack School District’s newest financial disclosure documents reveal that its trustees received a nominal remuneration increase the past year, but Abbotsford school board members receive at least $10,000 more than their Chilliwack counterparts.

The seven-member Board of Education saw their base pay increase from $24,846.96 for the period of July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024, to $25,518.00 in 2024-25, an increase of 2.7 per cent.

According to the 2024-25 Statement of Financial Information for the period of July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, board chair David Swankey received $27,407.22 in remuneration and $3,769.56 for expenses, for a total of $31,176.78. Board chairs are paid a little bit more for additional responsibilities.

Trustee Teri Westerby, who served as vice chair for part of the 2024-25 school year, received $26,362.27 in base compensation while registering $3,892.87 in expenses, the latter of which was the highest of all seven trustees.

Trustee Richard Procee received $25,518, the base remuneration, plus $600 in expenses.

Former trustee and current Chilliwack North MLA Heather Maahs served a partial year after being elected in October 2024, receiving $10,729.16 plus $250 in expenses for roughly five months of service during the 2024-25 period.

The job of an elected trustee in Chilliwack is not considered a full-time job, according to Maahs, who estimates that trustees devote about 20 hours per week throughout the year.

Chilliwack School District, with over 15,000 students enrolled, has a much lower trustee remuneration than Abbotsford School District, which enrols approximately 19,928 students.

Its trustees earn a base remuneration of $35,820.10, plus expenses, while its board chair, Shirley Wilson, earned a base remuneration of $45,918.19, plus expenses of $8,084.87.
