MAPLE RIDGE — Mounties in Maple Ridge are investigating after a 13-year-old girl was struck by a pickup truck in a marked crosswalk Monday morning.

According to a statement from the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment’s media relations unit, police are reminding residents to take extra precautions following the incident.

Police were called to a report of a collision involving a pickup truck and a youth pedestrian Monday morning (Jan. 12) at approximately 8 a.m. in the 10200 block of 242B Street. RCMP members attended and learned that the truck was travelling eastbound on 102 Avenue when it struck the female pedestrian. She was taken to hospital by emergency health services with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The male driver of the pickup truck remained on the scene.

Roads in the area were closed for some time but have since re-opened.

While the collision is still under investigation, a number of factors are being looked at including weather and road conditions at the time.

“Drivers and pedestrians are once again reminded to take extra precautions on our roadways, especially during this wet weather and during darker periods of the day when there is even less visibility,” says Ridge Meadows RCMP Operations Officer Insp. Martin Guay. “Drivers need to drive relative to current conditions and pay extra attention in areas where there may be increased foot traffic. Pedestrians are reminded to dress to be seen and make eye contact with drivers before safely entering the roadway.”

Anyone with more information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251 and quote file# 2026-750.
