District of Hope resorts to private security after repeated criminal acts

Jan 6, 2026 | 11:48 AM

HOPE — The District of Hope says it has utilized the services of a private security company after repeated instances of wire theft from streetlights.

In a statement, the district says incidents of wire theft started in the Richmond Hill area and have now spread to Park Street and is also impacting 4th Avenue.

Municipal public works crews are currently working to assess and repair the damage, but the theft of underground wiring has caused repeated disruptions and safety concerns. As a result, a private security company has been contracted since December 2025 to actively patrol these impacted areas.

The district is asking residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity around streetlights, electrical boxes, or roadside infrastructure, especially during late night or early morning hours. Residents are asked to please contact the RCMP immediately through the non-emergency line, 604-869-7750, if it’s suspicious. Residents can call 9-1-1 if they believe a crime is in progress.
