ABBOTSFORD — The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation (FVHCF) is looking to raise funds for a program that helps struggling youth touch grass, explore trails and observe their natural environment.

Monthly wellness walks at the Abbotsford-based Foundry are designed to support youth aged 13 to 18 with mental health challenges by providing opportunities to connect with nature.

“These walks are incredibly rich in both content and benefits,” said recreation therapist Jenna Paterson.

“I’ve seen kids arrive feeling sad or overwhelmed, and after the walk, their entire day shifts in a positive direction. What could have remained a difficult day often turns around completely after spending time in nature.”

Walks are led by an interpreter at various regional parks, stopping every 5 to 10 minutes to share nature-related information and conduct grounding activities, such as crafting “nature perfumes”, silent walks, microscopic exploration and more.

The FVHCF is now seeking sponsors to help fund the program’s $85 monthly cost.

Donations can be made through the foundation’s website.

The Foundry’s Adolescent Day Treatment Program was established in 2010 to help treat youth with severe psychiatric difficulties such as schizophrenia, major affective disorders and struggles with academic or social functioning.
