ABBOTSFORD — Forming connections in the first year of university is hard enough, but building friendships during the pandemic was an even more Herculean task.

It’s a challenge that University of the Fraser Valley student Hayden Koppes took on, nonetheless, and it earned him a Best in the West award at this year’s annual LEAD conference in Alberta.

The award celebrates post-secondary students working in residence across Western Canada.

Koppes, now in his fifth year and still living in Lá:lem te Baker, has been honoured for starting the Baker Battles– a game show-style program that has residents competing against other floors for camaraderie and prizes.

He started the Battles in 2021 as a first-year student struggling to find community amid COVID restrictions.

“That’s what inspired me to be a community assistant at Lá:lem te Baker,” he said. “I knew what I would have loved to experience in my first year, and what I wanted future students to experience.”

Since then, the Baker Battles have grown into a collaborative effort with Student Wellness, the Pride Collective, and Student Change Makers featuring themed activities and events.

With new student housing nearly complete across Lá:lem te Baker, Koppes is excited to see how the program evolves.

“The sky’s the limit.”
