LANGLEY — A rising rugby star is kicking her path into the Olympics after securing new funding from the Canadian Olympic Committee’s official talent search.

Eighteen-year-old Brooklyn Roddham has been selected as one of 35 funding recipients from the RBC Training Ground.

“As a crossover athlete coming from soccer, Brooke has been a standout player during the USPORTS season in only her second year of university,” said Iain Monaghan, NextGen head coach for women’s rugby at Rugby Canada. “Funding will help Brooke attend more senior-level and Next Gen camps throughout the year.”

Roddham will be involved in both 15- and seven-player teams, with her rankings already placed high on the Next Gen senior women’s depth charts.

The young fly-half grew up playing soccer in Langley, including with the BCSPL Langley United.

She played on Canada’s U20 women’s team during two matches in Ireland in May and is a member of the UBC Thunderbirds women’s team.

More than 2,500 athletes aged 14 to 25 were invited to participate in the annual talent search. Roddham joined fellow rugby player, Lana Dueck of Abbotsford, as well as 19-year-old Tristen Stacey from Mission, for the final held in Vancouver on November 1.

The National Sport Organization provides funding to support an athlete’s coaching, travel, nutrition and more.
