UPDATE #2, 3:10 P.M. MONDAY: DriveBC reported at 2:57 p.m. Monday afternoon that Highway 1 is now open following the police investigation. Cones are currently being picked up and all lanes will be available shortly.

SURREYUPDATE, 9:40 A.M. MONDAY: BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin has confirmed one person is deceased after a head-on collision on Highway 1 in Surrey Monday morning, resulting in the westbound closure of the highway.

According to a statement, Cpl. McLaughlin says the first 911 call came just after 7:15 a.m. on Monday morning December 22, 2025, when three vehicles collided in the westbound lanes of Highway 1 just before the 176 Street exit in Surrey.

One of the vehicles appears to have crossed over from the eastbound lanes and caused a head-on collision, Cpl. McLaughlin said.

“This collision was immediately and obviously serious, and that caused a complete shutdown of the highway,” Cpl. McLaughlin said. “Our first priority is to help the injured, then we need to start the investigation and inform the families of the dead and injured about what happened. We encourage people to consider those families before they post photos of bodies to the internet.”

To ensure that families have time to process the information and grieve, Cpl. McLaughlin said police will not be releasing more details about the people involved in the collision at this time.

Anyone who saw the collision, or has dash-camera video of the driving behaviour leading up to the crash, is asked to call BC Highway Patrol – Burnaby at 604-526-9744 and quote file (1003) 2025-4185.Witnesses should call the BC Highway Patrol – Burnaby office at 604-526-9744 and quote file (1003) 2025-4185.

“We’d like to remind everyone to be extra-cautious and consider slowing down to under the speed limit during dark, dangerous winter driving conditions,” says Corporal McLaughlin. “Serious and fatal collisions are the last thing we want to see at Christmas.”

DriveBC says the 192 Street and 176 Street westbound entrance ramps are closed.

DriveBC reported at 8:19 a.m. Monday morning that Highway 1 westbound had been closed at the 176 Street intersection.

“The highway is now CLOSED westbound at 176th St due to a vehicle incident. Expect delays due to congestion. Assessment in progress. Consider an alternate route,” DriveBC wrote at 8:19 a.m.
