UPDATE: Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Alexandra Greenley says a 27-year-old local mom was the victim of Monday’s tragedy at Island 22 after she was tragically and fatally struck by a tree limb.

According to a statement, Sgt. Greenley says Chilliwack RCMP received a report at about 3:12 p.m. Monday for a female who had been struck by a tree limb, on a trail near the dog park at Island 22. The female had been walking with her two young children when this occurred. The weather at the time was severe and unpredictable, marked by high winds and heavy rain, Sgt. Greenley.

Police say two other people who were in the area at the time called 9-1-1 and provided care to the female. Chilliwack Fire Department and Emergency Health Services attended and provided life‑saving measures. Unfortunately, the 27‑year‑old Chilliwack woman was pronounced deceased at the scene, Sgt. Greenley said.

The BC Coroners Service attended and continues to investigate.

“At this time, there is no indication of this being anything other than a tragic and unforeseen event,” Sgt. Greenley said.

Next of kin notifications have been completed, she said.  The children were not physically harmed and are with family now.

“The Chilliwack RCMP would like to thank the members of the public who acted quickly to help the female, and care for the children, during this difficult incident,” Sgt. Greenley said.

The Fraser Valley Regional District has released a statement of grief and sympathy in response to the tragic incident at the regional park.

“The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) confirms that a tragic incident occurred in Island 22 Regional Park during a period of highly unstable weather on December 15, 2025, where a visitor to the park has passed away,” the statement read. “Our deepest sympathies are with the grieving family during this exceptionally difficult time. We extend our sincere appreciation to the brave Samaritans and First Responders who attended the Park to render support during the tragedy. Island 22 Regional Park will remain closed until an assessment can be completed by a professional arborist as numerous trees were damaged during the December 15, 2025, weather incident. From a place of heavy hearts and sincere respect for those individuals impacted, no further statements by the FVRD will be provided at this time.”

Mayor Ken Popove released a similar statement on behalf of the City of Chilliwack: “The news about the tragic accident at Island 22 Regional Park is absolutely devastating, and our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends.”
